The GPU with 8GB as AMD and Nvidia both have new cards ready to go! hope you like
This is something else we were expecting, but new trade body listings confirm that both AMD's RX 7600 and Nvidia's RTX 4060 Ti graphics cards are imminent. And both will run with just 8GB of graphics memory.
The listing is posted on the website of the Eurasian Economic Commission, the governing body of the Eurasian Economic Union, roughly the former Soviet bloc's equivalent of the European Union.
Anyway, one listing for ASRock includes entries for the RX 7600 indicating 8GB of graphics memory, while another for Gigabyte has both the RX 7600 and Nvidia's RTX 4060 Ti, both running 8GB of graphics memory .
The listing also implies that these cards will be launched soon and in fact for some time it is expected that both the cards will appear at the fair just before the Computex tech trade fair later in May or possibly as early as June.
The big remaining unknown is pricing. And that'll be pricing and how it lines up with the 8GB frame buffers that define these cards. As we've mentioned before, games that break the 8GB barrier, even just running at 1080p, are becoming more widespread.
If these new cards are super affordable, then the fact that they can occasionally run into VRAM issues would be acceptable. But if they keep up with the current trend of skyrocketing GPU prices, 8GB will be very hard to tolerate. Put it this way, a $400 GPU with only 8GB? no, thanks.
The problem, of course, for both cards is that there's really no option other than 8GB. Both are said to run a 128-bit memory bus, and the current graphics memory is available in 1GB and 2GB module formats, both with 32-bit interfaces.
This means you have a choice of 4GB or 8GB on a 128-bit board. And 4GB is a total non-starter. 12GB of memory will require a 192-bit bus, and 16GB will require a 256-bit bus. Meanwhile, increasing the bus width would require a total redesign of the GPU.
Incidentally, the listing indicates the RX 7600 instead of the 7600 XT. And we're expecting the XT variant at launch, so it's unclear whether both XT and non-XT models will be available from the start.
Anyway, we think these cards are fully expected to take on the state of the existing AMD RX 7000 and Nvidia RTX 40-series GPUs, partly because of this specific 8GB concern. That said, we're expecting Nvidia's RTX 4060 Ti cards to be faster as well, leading to higher pricing for Nvidia's offering. But we will know soon as both are expected to arrive before the end of the month.
